Description for 2023/24

This module is designed for those who have completed Russian 1 or equivalent. It helps to develop further writing, speaking, reading and listening skills in Russian. By successfully completing the module, students will be able to conduct simple short conversations about themselves, their hobbies and skills, homes and immediate surroundings, eating and drinking, and public transport. They will be able to give or obtain information on locations of amenities and travel arrangements.

Aims
This module aims to develop further written, reading, speaking and listening skills acquired in Russian 1; provide them with a basic understanding of culture specific behaviour; and enable them to become efficient language learners.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and understand familiar words, basic phrases and sentences related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. personal information) when people speak slowly and clearly: 1,3
Understand and extract key information from short, simple words and sentences written in Russian: 1,2
Interact in very simple, familiar situations, asking and answering simple questions in areas of immediate need, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly: 3
Write simple words, phrases and sentences providing personal information in Russian: 1,2
Understand and use simple grammatical structures and rules and develop language learning strategies: 1,2,3
Recognise and act upon very basic cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations and demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in Russia: 1,2,3

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one Russian language module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Online Tasks weighted 30%
Online Tasks
Students will complete a series of online exercises to assess their reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills in the target language.

2: Class Test weighted 20%
Class Test
Students will complete an in-class test which may include writing a short text in the target language in class

3: Oral Exam weighted 50%
Spoken Interaction Assessment
A 4-8 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive), listening (receptive) and conversation (interaction) skills. Task may include presentation, role play, description or similar and question and answer. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups, individual marks will be awarded to each student.
