Description

This module will provide you with the experience of working in a planning and production team in the layout of an envisaged $ùmagazine&© or $ùjournal&© concerned with culture. Each student will write one main article which will be negotiated with the publishing group plus smaller mini articles such as music reviews etc. Successful completion of the module will enable you to gain sophisticated skills in the analysis of writings on art and/or culture and cultural issues. It will also allow you to gain confidence in your own abilities to plan and complete similar work in the context of the demands of journal production.

The group will negotiate a 'house style' and design, using both text and image with Adobe Photoshop and Quarkxpress software to produce both a print version of their journal and an electronic version. This module incorporates employability skills which are highly desirable within media industries.
Aims
1. To enable third year students to gain sophisticated skills in the analysis of writings on art and/or culture and cultural issues. To gain confidence in their own abilities to plan and complete similar work in the context of the demands of journal production

2. To consolidate research and writing skills, acquired in years 1 and 2

3. To develop further students&© competencies in analysing the writings of others and in producing their own text

4. To deepen students&© interpersonal skills in working in groups; to produce a draft journal layout with examples of writing by students (e.g. art criticism, book/film/music reviews, a cultural event, community event, polemic article, short scholarly article etc).

Study hours
24 hours of lectures, small group workshops, individual supervision and group presentations.

Description of Module Assessment
01: Group Project weighted 50%
Production of a cultural magazine/journal
Collectively each production group will produce a minimum 28-page $ùmagazine&© or $ùjournal&© or equivalent depending on the format of the publication. During the module students will consider a range of possibilities (professional journals such as Artforum, October, Art History and popular magazines like Vogue, Heat etc.) Specific $ùjournals&© or $ùmagazines&© will provide paradigms but students should think about contemporary circumstances and contexts for the publication of such magazines, including issues around market and audience.
02: Workbook weighted 50%
The workbook shows the development of ideas, working methodology, research and the group working process
The workbook should contain an archive of the student's research and production, drafts of articles, and minutes of the group meetings. It should also show the groups decision processes in the production of the project. Students should also include the research behind the articles, including individual research into journal/magazine layouts, typography, paper types etc. The student should also include an in-depth critical evaluation of both the group&©s work and final journal, and an individual evaluation of contribution to the project.
