Description

This module focuses on the creation of a short film. You will learn the fundamentals of video production, including the techniques and the aesthetics of screen writing, shooting, composition and editing. Most importantly you will learn by doing. This is a hands on course that encourages you to familiarise yourself with digital video equipment, consider the work of other film and documentary makers, experiment with and develop your own filmmaking style and begin acquiring a knowledge of film language and terminology.

The key areas of focus are:

- Film language and terminology (critical analysis of films and conventions)
- Pre-production (scriptwriting, storyboarding, schedules and planning)
- Production (camera operation, directing)
- Post-production (editing)

Assessment will be by a group project, 3-5 minute short film (50%) and a workbook (50%).
Aims
&ˇ To study film language, conventions and terminology.
&ˇ To gain a range of basic practical skills in film production (pre-production, production and post-production).
&ˇ Enable critical understanding of the moving image.
&ˇ Develop knowledge of Final Cut Pro video editing software.

Study hours
22 Contact hours of lectures, workshops and group supervision.

50 hours of reflection, revision and consolidation of theory and practice introduced in lectures, workshops and group supervision including research and individual skills development.

10 hours of group production meetings to discuss project development.

8 hours to produce material for formative assessment.

60 hours of practical work in the production of assessed final project material.
Description of Module Assessment
01: Workbook weighted 50%
Workbook of at least twenty pages
A personal record of each student&Šs aims, objectives, project development, research material, production diary, critical analysis, group/project evaluation and theoretical discourse. The theoretical discourse will include a macro and microanalysis of a chosen film i.e. a general analysis of a film and a detailed deconstruction of a 60-90 second excerpt from said film.
02: Group Project weighted 50%
3-5 minute short film
The production of audiovisual content totalling 3-5 minutes and the compression and authoring of that content onto a DVD format.
