Description

This module is the culmination of the Applied Biomedical Science Placement, where students spend - depending on the placement offer - either 14 or 46 weeks between Levels 2 and 3 in a Pathology Laboratory, gaining work experience and engaging with a Placement Training Programme. On entering their final year of study, successful students will have completed their ABMS Placement Portfolio during this placement, demonstrating their competence in the HPC Standards of Proficiency for Biomedical Scientists.

Aims

To complete the ABMS Placement Portfolio, incorporating the HPC Standards of Proficiency for Biomedical Scientists. To provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their placement experiences, particularly with respect to interprofessional education. To consolidate learning from the Applied Biomedical Science (ABMS) placement, by the preparation of a detailed scientific report based on a clinical case study carried out on placement.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate their achievement of the HPC Standards of Proficiency for Biomedical Scientists will be achieved by assessments: 01
Critically reflect on the extent and limits of their knowledge and how this impacts on working effectively with colleagues in other disciplines will be achieved by assessments: 01
Critically reflect on the placement learning experience in order to identify personal and professional goals for CPD and lifelong learning will be achieved by assessments: 01
Communicate appropriately and effectively as a professional with a range of audiences will be achieved by assessments: 01, 02
Evaluate collaborative problem solving and decision making processes and judge their impact on client care will be achieved by assessments: 01
Critically evaluate the role of Pathology in the diagnosis, management and treatment of disease, using a clinical case study will be achieved by assessments: 01
Take responsibility for their own learning and to reflect upon that learning will be achieved by assessments: 01
Analyse and interpret laboratory data to produce statistical analysis will be achieved by assessments: 02
Perform practical laboratory techniques to a required standard will be achieved by assessments: 02

Study hours

75 hours: portfolio preparation
20 hours: research report preparation
10 hours: reflective analysis
5 hours: laboratory tour &portfolio assessment
10 hours: tutorials
30 hours: independent study

Description of Module Assessment

01: Portfolio (must pass this element)
ABMS Placement Portfolio, incorporating HPC Standards of Proficiency for Biomedical Scientists, with supproting evidence
the ABMS Placement Portfolio incorporates all of the HPC Standards of Proficiency for Biomedical Scientists. The assessment requires the submission of a completed portfolio, with all standards signed off as completed by placement training officers and/or academic placement tutor, as appropriate, together with a supporting folder of evidence.

02: Research Report weighted 100%
5000 word report, based on practical and analytical work undertaken whilst on placement
The report will provide a detailed evaluation of a methodology employed by Pathology to produce precise and accurate results within the NHS Clinical Pathology Accreditation framework. Inter and intra assay variability will be investigated and assessed for statistical and clinical significance.
