Description

This is year-long module for students undertaking the Applied Biomedical Sciences option, which aims to deliver training and education to meet partial fulfilment of the Standards of Proficiency issued by the Health Professions Council (HPC), as given in the IBMS Registration Portfolio, and to prepare students for their hospital-based practice placement. Students taking the Biomedical Science route may also take this module as an option.

Aims

To develop an understanding of the principles, theory and competent practice of Biomedical Science and the relative roles of different Health Care Professionals within the NHS.


Intended Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the functional roles of the different regulatory and professional bodies pertaining to Biomedical Scientists.
Know well established principles that regulates BMS registration, code of conduct, continued HPC registration and laboratory accreditation.
Critically evaluate the roles of registered BMS and the Pathology services and understand their relationships with each other and with other health care professionals.
Apply the underlying concepts and principles of health and safety legislation to the workplace and understand the need to maintain a safe working environment.
Know well established principles and legislation that upholds patient confidentiality.
Critically understand the importance of Quality Management throughout Pathology and apply underlying concepts of quality assurance and clinical audit.
Critically evaluate different approaches to solving problems as part of a team, exercise personal responsibility, know limits of knowledge and appreciate how these skills affect Health Care Professionals.
Communicate information effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences unambiguously, verbally and non-verbally.
Demonstrate collaboration in an inter-professional environment in order to achieve goals and ultimately to help end users (patients).
Write reflectively from a professional perspective.
