Description for 2023/24

The module will build on skills acquired in German 2 or the equivalent (e.g. CEFR Level A1) and expand your vocabulary base and ability to interact in everyday situations in German. The topics covered in this module include orientation, eating and leisure, weather and holidays. You will consolidate and broaden your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in class, as well as practise your communicative skills.
Various aspects of contemporary German life will be discussed, based on class, online and audiovisual material and thereby give you an insight into German culture and customs. There will be a variety of tasks and exercises in class time, such as partner exercises, listening comprehension, role-play and reading and writing tasks. You will consolidate the skills acquired in class through further web-based self-study exercises.
The language level of this module corresponds to A1+ work leading to Level A2 in the European Common Framework for Languages (CEFR -A1+/A2)

Aims
This module aims to consolidate written, reading, oral and listening skills in the target language, as well as providing students with an understanding of German life and culture.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and understand familiar words, basic sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. personal information, studies, hobbies, daily routine, etc.) when people speak slowly and clearly: 1,3
Understand, summarize and extract key information from simple written texts related to areas of immediate personal relevance: 1,2
Interact in simple, familiar situations, asking and answering simple questions related to a range of topics (family and friends, hobbies, education, work, etc.), being able to ask for repetition or clarification, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly: 3
Write simple notes, messages and short texts (e.g. personal letters or emails) related to areas of immediate personal relevance, making pertinent grammatical and lexical choices: 1,2
Recognise and use simple grammatical structures and rules in the target language and compare them to English: 1,2,3
Recognize and act upon basic cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations, demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in the German speaking world, and identify different registers and varieties of the language: 1,2,3

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one German language module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Online Tasks weighted 30%
Online tasks
Students will complete a series of online exercises to assess their reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills in the target language.

2: Class Test weighted 20%
Class test.
Students will complete an in-class test which may include writing a short text in the target language in class.

3: Oral Exam weighted 50%
Spoken interaction assessment
A 6-10 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive), listening (receptive) and conversation (interaction) skills. Task may include presentation, role play, description or similar and question and answer. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups, individual marks will be awarded to each student.
