Description for 2023/24

French 4 is designed to continue French language study for students who have successfully completed French 3 or equivalent (e.g. GCSE Grade B-C/4-5, CEFR Level A1+)
It will enhance skills already acquired, developing knowledge of everyday French in spoken, written, reading and listening activities.
Topics include talking about the past (education, life and work experience) and future career plans. You will consolidate and broaden your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in class, as well as practice your communicative skills. As in the preceding course, the targeted exercises and audio-visual material provided are extended by online activities. When the course is completed, you can expect to have acquired a denser, more complex understanding of the language, together with the ability to respond with confidence. Various aspects of contemporary Francophone life will be discussed to give you an insight into Francophone culture and customs.
The language level of this module corresponds to A1+ work leading to Level A2 in the European Common Framework for Languages (CEFR A2).

Aims
The module aims at improving students communication skills; to consolidate previous grammatical knowledge and widen their vocabulary; provide them with a basic understanding of culture specific behaviour; and enable them to become efficient language learners.

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form.
Students are only permitted to take one French language module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Online Tasks weighted 30%
Online Tasks
Students will complete a series of online exercises to assess their reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills in the target language.

2: Class Test weighted 20%
Class Test
Students will complete an in-class test which may include writing a short text in the target language in class.

3: Oral Exam weighted 50%
Spoken interaction assessment
A 6-10 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive) and listening (receptive) skills. Task may include role play, presentation, question and answer, description and similar. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups individual marks will be awarded to each student.
