Description

This module provides students with training in the environmental statistics and applied geo-statistical analysis tools. It provides an insight into the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for spatial data analysis and modelling as well as an introduction into environmental modelling and scenario analysis techniques. These skills are all essential skills sought by employers in environmental industries.

Aims

To enable students to gain knowledge, understanding and experience in the application of the following techniques in Environmental Science: 1) Analysis and interpretation of environmental data (time series and spatial data analysis); 2) Environmental modelling; 3) Prediction and scenario techniques.

Intended Learning Outcomes

To demonstrate and be able to apply knowledge and critical understanding of a variety of data analysis tools and their application for spatial data and time series.
To demonstrate and be able to apply systematic knowledge and critical understanding of geo-statistical methods and their application.
To demonstrate a critical understanding of different modelling techniques in the Environmental Sciences and to be able to evaluate, develop and apply the most suitable modelling methods for different environmental problems.
To demonstrate critical understanding of scenario generations and predictions, and model uncertainties and prediction limitations, and be able to differentiate and develop scenario assumptions relating to a range of environmental problems.
