Description

Students carry out an independent research project in an environmental science-related topic of their choosing. This module will develop skills in research design, data collection, analysis and interpretation, and the presentation of research findings in a report.

Aims

  • To enable students to develop a detailed knowledge and understanding of key multi-disciplinary issues in the forefront of Applied Environmental Sciences research through the medium of an independent research project.
  • To critically evaluate Applied Environmental Science concepts, practical methodologies and complex scientific issues using a range of primary and secondary information sources.
  • To develop the student's own learning skills whilst extending their subject-related knowledge and understanding.
  • To develop the skills necessary to exercise individual analysis, initiative and judgement on complex issues and be able to communicate these at an appropriate scientific level (i.e., via a written project dissertation).

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • To have a systematic, detailed, coherent knowledge and understanding of a key multi-disciplinary issue/problem at the forefront of Applied Environmental Sciences, and to have made well-informed arguments and judgments on that issue, whist appreciating the limits of the current knowledge.
  • To have applied own knowledge, skills and experience to an aspect of current Applied Environmental Science research (through the use of established, analytical scientific methods, literature review, data collection & interpretation, etc), and to have developed the skills necessary to exercise own independent analysis, initiative and self-learning.
