Description

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are of increasing importance to our understanding and management of environmental problems. This module introduces fundamental GIS concepts and capabilities and examines a variety of environmental applications ranging from natural resources management to the
disposal of toxic waste. The applied nature of the course is reinforced by appropriate training in the use of
industry-standard GIS software and an opportunity is presented for students to apply their new skills to
addressing a specific environmental case study.

Aims

To further students knowledge and comprehension of the concepts of GIS and to demonstrate ways in which such understanding can be applied to solving real-world environmental problems

Intended Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a clear knowledge and understanding of key GIS concepts. (2,3)
Demonstrate awareness of environmental data sources and capture methodologies (2,3)
Critically evaluate alternative GIS techniques in relation to environmental applications (2,3)
Demonstrate appropriate skills in the application of ArcGIS GIS software to the solving of environmental problems (1,2)
Deploy appropriate GIS methodologies in order to carry out a project which addresses a specific environmental issue (1,2)
