This module builds upon the coverage in year 1 of geophysical, remote sensing, geographical/geological information system (GIS) techniques for the handling of a variety of geoscience data. It is divided into four sections:
a) Applied Geophysics with emphasis on the gravity, magnetics, resistivity and ground penetrating radar surveying techniques.
b) Remote Sensing focusing on the use of image processing techniques
c) Geographical/Geological Information Systems (GIS) covering the of development geoscience databases, surface modelling and spatial analysis.
d) Computer aided mapping covering the production of digital maps in the field, interpolation techniques and volumetric calculations.
e) 3D visualisation of geoscience data and virtual reality covering the techniques and technologies available, as well as applications. This section of the module includes an off-site visit for the demonstration of a 3D visualisation/virtual reality facility.
The further development of writing (technical report), numeracy and computing skills are also embedded within this module.
