Description for 2023/24

This is the final module of four leading to the Trinity College (London) Certificate in TESOL and the main focus is on preparing students for the moderation visit by a Trinity assessor. You are encouraged to use your creativity to develop and evaluate various types of learning materials including audio-visual sources and how to develop a syllabus. At the same time you will continue to develop practical skills through teaching asylum seekers and groups of visiting international students. Throughout the module we discuss career development and how you can find work both in the UK and overseas.

Aims
To continue the development of students' knowledge of the main features of phonological, lexical and syntactic features of contemporary written and spoken English.
To further develop methodological knowledge by examining the relationship between language acquisition theory, language teaching methodology and materials design.
To further develop skills in teaching practice and classroom management
To critically analyse self-created teaching materials.
To make final preparations for the moderation visit.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Devise, carry out and self-critique lessons using a range of teaching methods and techniques: 1,3
Critically analyse and explain the phonological and grammatical structures of contemporary English: 1,2,3
Design, rationalise and evaluate teaching materials to be used in practical sessions: 1,3,4

School Rules

Successful completion of Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language 3 with a mark of 60% or more.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Practical Assessment weighted 30%
Teaching Practice
The trainee teacher will teach one one-hour lesson to a group of non-native English speaking learners.

2: Coursework weighted 20%
Language Awareness exercises
Two class tests based on the theoretical, grammatical and phonological input covered in syllabus.

3: Class Participation weighted 20%
The highly practical nature of the module necessitates full participation in all elements.
Assessment is based on the quality of the student's contribution to the input sessions, evidence of a developing understanding of the methods and techniques involved in English language teaching, participation in both lesson planning and lesson feedback sessions and timely and accurate completion of portfolios.

4: Portfolio weighted 30%
Materials Portfolio
Students will write a materials portfolio of approximately 500 words including rationale and evaluation based on materials they have selected. Completion of all portfolios, including conclusions and recommendations for further study for the Learner Profile.
