This is the second module of four leading to the Trinity College (London) Certificate in TESOL. This module builds on skills and knowledge presented in module 1 and continues to develop an understanding of English language structures whilst introducing the English language sound system. This module examines the types of errors learners make, why they may make them and what practical techniques we can use to help our learners. You will also take an in-depth look at what goes into choosing a course book for your learners, how to design effective handouts and the ways in which technology can enhance our teaching. During this module, students will begin their teaching practice at a local charity.
Aims
To further develop student knowledge of the main phonological, lexical and syntactic features of contemporary spoken and written English.To continue to develop methodological knowledge by introducing the concept of register, the role of first language interference and skills-based teaching.To develop skills in teaching practice and classroom management including observing experienced teachers.To introduce students to the rationale behind materials design.

Successful completion of Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language 1 with a mark of 60% or more.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Practical Assessment weighted 30%Practical (Teaching Practice)The trainee teachers will teach two lessons to a group of non-native English speaking learners.
2: Coursework weighted 20%Language Awareness exercisesTwo class tests based on the theoretical, grammatical and phonological input covered in the syllabus.
3: Class Participation weighted 20%The highly practical nature of the module necessitates full participation in all elements.Assessment is based on the student's contribution to the input sessions, evidence of a developing understanding of the methods and techniques involved in English language teaching, participation in both lesson planning and lesson feedback sessions and timely and accurate completion of portfolios.
4: Portfolio weighted 30%CritiqueComplete a critique of approximately 1,000 words using a set of criteria to evaluate a chosen textbook. Two journal entries describing English classes they have observed. Each entry must run to a minimum of 350 words.
