Description for 2023/24

This is the first of four electives, taken over a two-year period, leading to the Trinity College (London) Certificate in TESOL, one of the most widely recognised and highly regarded initial English language teaching qualifications in the world. Graduates have gone on to teach in such exciting locales as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Singapore, Brazil, Japan, and throughout Europe, as well as working in summer schools within the UK.

This module provides the key foundations of English language teaching. The module includes an introduction to the structure of the English language. It also introduces you to the principal methodologies and techniques such as classroom management and lesson planning, as well as practical skills such as giving instructions and board work. You will have the opportunity to experience learning an unknown language, and carry out peer teaching practice. It may also be possible for you to teach international students at a local charity.

Please note that all successful applicants will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check. Students will be expected to make the payment of £44. International students working towards completion of the four TESOL modules are asked to provide a certificate of good conduct from their country of residence.

To introduce students to the main phonological, lexical and syntactic features of contemporary spoken and written English.
To provide students with an overview of the field of English language teaching and practice in a variety of language teaching methods.
To begin to develop skills in teaching practice and classroom management including observing experienced teachers.
To offer practical experience of learning an unknown language.
To provide students with a platform from which they can progress through a further three modules towards the Trinity College Certificate in TESOL.
