Description for 2025/26

Drawing on business-related themes, this module will help Keele Business School students to develop and refine the specific writing, reading and verbal communication skills they need to succeed in their studies. Through a series of classes, workshops, assignments, online and practical tasks, students will improve their ability to write academic essays and reports. Students will also develop the skills necessary to prepare and deliver academic presentations and take part in seminars. You will improve and develop transferable academic skills that can help you to succeed not only in this module, but also in your other business modules or future career.

Aims
To develop academic communication skills, primarily in reading and writing, with some development of academic English vocabulary and language structures, for use on other modules across Keele Business School.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Assignment weighted 20%
Writing Task 1
Students must produce a written piece of work of up to 500 words ( +/- 10%) to demonstrate an ability to produce an original, concise and coherent piece of academic writing relevant to written academic texts or written business genres and in line with academic style and conventions. Examples may include introductions, conclusions, body paragraphs, discussion of literature, recommendations, limitations, proposals.

2: Assignment weighted 20%
Writing Task 2
Students must produce a written piece of work of up to 500 words ( +/- 10%) to demonstrate an ability to produce an original, concise and coherent piece of academic writing relevant to written academic texts or written business genres and in line with academic style and conventions. Examples may include introductions, conclusions, body paragraphs, discussion of literature, recommendations, limitations, proposals.

3: Presentation weighted 10%
Poster Presentation
Description: Students must individually create a poster and a 5-minute recorded presentation that effectively communicates a business-related topic. Students will demonstrate their ability to communicate, synthesize and organise relevant information and present it in a visually engaging way in line with academic style and conventions.

4: Assignment weighted 20%
Writing Task 3
Students must produce a written piece of work of up to 500 words ( +/- 10%) to demonstrate an ability to produce an original, concise and coherent piece of academic writing relevant to written academic texts or written business genres and in line with academic style and conventions. Examples may include introductions, conclusions, body paragraphs, discussion of literature, recommendations, limitations, proposals.

5: Assignment weighted 20%

Students must produce a written piece of work of up to 500 words ( +/- 10%) to demonstrate an ability to produce an original, concise and coherent piece of academic writing relevant to written academic texts or written business genres and in line with academic style and conventions. 6: Presentation weighted 10%
Group Presentation
Students must produce a 10-15 minute presentation on a topic supplied by the tutor. Numbers per presentation group to be determined by student numbers and/or mode of delivery. Students must produce a PPT in line with academic style and conventions and deliver the presentation live in front of the tutor and peers. Students will demonstrate their ability to communicate, synthesize and organise relevant information and present it in a visually engaging way in line with academic style and conventions. Assessment criteria incorporate both individual and group components
