ENL-30002: Pronunciation and Fluency Improvement 2

To enable non-native-English speaking students to focus on improving those areas of their spoken English that affect communicative competence and intelligibility, while continuing to work on troublesome areas of English pronunciation. Students will work on accent amelioration and developing more 'natural-sounding' English. Ample opportunities will be provided for discussion activities for academic purposes and students will have the opportunity to prepare and deliver a brief oral presentation to their peers and field questions at the end.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Oral Test weighted 40%

a series of 5 speaking assessments
A recorded, diagnostic speaking assessment will be administered to students on enrollment to determine specific individual targets. These targets will form the basis of five 8-10 minute speaking assessments, which will typically focus on consonant clusters, word and sentences stress, weak forms, emphasis and joining words to assess individual progress in accent amelioration, pronunciation, intonation and fluency.

02: Oral Presentation weighted 20%

10-minute academic oral presentation
A 10-minute academic oral presentation on a topic related to the student's field of study or research, with an opportunity to field questions at the end. Preparation and practice will be done in class time and privately.

03: Class Participation weighted 40%

Active participation in class sessions
Active participation in class sessions and activities, including pronunciation practice sessions, peer feedback on presentations and discussions on topics agreed in advance by the class, is essential to achieving the outcomes of this module.
