Description

Never be afraid to do something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the titanic.

As you move into your second year of the course the focus shifts from the theory of language teaching and learning to practical experience. Working closely with a small group of English language learners, you will plan and deliver lessons to suit their needs whilst having the opportunity to profile one learner in order to gain a clearer understanding of the types of problems they may have when learning English and how you can help them overcome those problems. In the classroom we look at how teaching children is different from teaching adult learners, teaching English for specific purposes such as English for the tourism industry, and we critically assess the UKs immigrant 'English as a Second or Other Language' programme.

Aims

To continue development of knowledge of the main features (syntactic, lexical and phonolgical) of contemporary spoken and written English.
To enable students to assess the needs of individual learners and to develop schemes of work based on those needs.
To further develop the methodological knowledge and skills necessary to carry out sucessful classroom teaching.
To introduce the concept of English for Specific Purposes.
To familiarise students with the Skills For Life syllabus.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Practical Assessment weighted 40%
Teaching Practice
Trainee teachers complete two one-hour teaching practicals to a group of non-native English speaking students.

02: Exercise weighted 10%
Completion of two language awareness exercises
Students will complete two thirty-minute in-class exercises based on the theoretical, syntactical and phonological input covered in class.

03: Portfolio weighted 40%
Completion of a portfolio based on analysis of the needs of a English language learner
Students will carry out an analysis of the needs of an English language learner. This will consist of an interview, a test of the learner's speaking, reading, writing and listening skills. Students will then develop a scheme of work for a further 10-hours of self-study for the learner.

04: Class Participation weighted 10%
The highly practical nature of the module necessitates full participation in all elements.
Based on the student's contribution to the input sessions, the mark will take into account evidence of a developing understanding of the methods and techniques involved in English language teaching and the quality of their contributions.
