Description

In this module students will be introduced to key concepts such as $ùreflective teaching&© and $ùcritical pedagogy&© and to some of the ways in which these have been theorised. Students will explore pedagogical issues in teaching in secondary schools and the critical role of teachers in delivering and shaping school knowledge. The module aims to explore critical and reflective learning and its applications to various school subjects drawing primarily on $ùconstructivist&© learning theory. Students will also explore the policy context for secondary school teaching and how the work of the teachers is shaped by it.

Aims

1) To introduce students to key concepts such as $ùreflective teaching&© and $ùcritical pedagogy&© and to some of the ways in which these have been theorised;
2) To critically explore pedagogical issues in teaching in secondary schools and the critical role of teachers in delivering and shaping school knowledge;
3) To explore notions of critical thinking and reflective learning and its applications to various school subjects;
4) To facilitate students' engagement with a variety of perspectives and insights into the teaching of different curriculum areas within secondary schools.


Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Employ and assess key concepts such as 'reflective teaching' and $ùcritical pedagogy&© will be achieved by assessments: 1, 2,3
  • Engage with debates on the role of the teacher in secondary education, with particular reference to designing and delivering a reflective curriculum and practice will be achieved by assessments: 1,2,3
  • Access and interrogate critical and reflective approaches to school knowledge and their relation to the taught curriculum will be achieved by assessments: 1,2,3
  • Critically reflect on some of the consequences of New Labour's $ùstandards&© agenda on critical pedagogy and reflective teaching will be achieved by assessments: 1,2,3
  • Work with others to make a presentation on module themes will be achieved by assessments: 2,3

Essay (2,500 words) on module themes
An essay (from a list of options) designed to explore policies and pedagogies for teaching in secondary education

02: Presentation weighted 20%
individual presentation
individual 10 minute presentation requiring students to critique the concept of the 'reflective teacher/practitioner'

03: Group Presentation
formative group presentations
formative group presentations designed to assist students in the preparation for summative assessment
