Description

This course will explore the use of contemporary technologies in educational contexts. We will work to explore the emerging use of these technologies in supporting formal teaching and learning within educational settings. The module focuses on social theory and the rise of technology and rhetoric around ICT in Education Policy and the knowledge economy. Students will be encouraged to design their own original learning resource.

Aims

1) To encourage students to explore their own learning processes in the context of Information and Communication Technology;
2) To facilitate students reflection on their personal experience of learning in the light of theories and research about learning in Higher education and about the potential of ICT for learning;
3) Enable students to work in teams to pursue intellectual and practical projects.

Study hours

22 hours contact time (consisting of 10 hours lecture; 10 hours workshops and 2 hours individual supervision time);
20 hours team meetings and preparation for seminar/workshops;
35 hours preparation and writing of essay;
18 hours preparation for presentation;
55 hours preparation and writing of portfolio (including 10 hours journal log).



Description of Module Assessment

01: Portfolio
Portfolio to include
ePortfolio of links to resources that have been created or referenced by the student using digital technology. The resources may be in a range of forms - written, visual or audio and it is expected that the student will draw on this material when writing their essays.

02: Presentation weighted 20%
Online Presentation (10 minutes) about re-thinking existing models of learning and teaching
Small group presentation of 10 minutes duration requiring students to critique the potential transformative effects of emerging digital technologies with respect to the future viability of established University models of teaching.

03: Essay weighted 80%
Individual Essay 2,500 words.
An essay critically exploring a students personal learning experience of using digital technologies in support of an enquiry based learning project. This will be referenced against contemporary research and module experiences as evidenced by the portfolio.
