Description

Visual media, including film are of growing significance as resources in management and organizational communication. Drawing on the latest research in this field, this module shows students both how and why media matters. By the end of this module, students will have a good understanding of how visual media influences our collective and individual perspectives of organizing, managing and other employment-related activities. By developing a critical awareness of key issues that affect audience reception, students acquire a set of highly transferable communication and creative skills that will enhance their employability in a number of different organizational contexts from the creative industries to consumer research and public relations.

Aims

To develop student understanding of processes of organizational identity formation and expression via visual media, such as You Tube. Themes such as corporate ethics and sustainability, identities of production and consumption, globalization, corporate and personal branding, organizational change and employee resistance will be explored in the module through the use of a combination of teaching and learning techniques.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Essay weighted 60%
An essay to assess overall learning on the module.
The essay (3,000 words) will assess students' ability to interpret the implications of social and visual media in the production and expression of organizational and managerial identities. Students are encouraged to demostrate their own visual literacy in analysing the role of new media in organizations.

02: Group Project weighted 40%
Students work together in small groups to produce a short (2-5 minute) film which will be submitted for assessment.
By designing and producing their own short film, students acquire both technical skills as well as team-working and performative skills of self-presentation. The film will be accompanied by a 500 word reflective commentary.
