Description The scale and pace of human-generated environmental change, which has occurred in the wake of global industrialization, is historically unprecedented. This module will explore the roots of modern environmentalism through an examination of environmental change and cultural responses to it. We will explore the contentious meaning of such terms as 'the environment', 'nature' and 'wilderness', the tension between social and natural histories, and the role/s of science, technology, colonialism, imperialism and ideology in reshaping the concepts of the environment. The module will focus on an analysis of the political, religious and scientific beliefs that have shaped society's relationship with nature, and how such relationships have been challanged by competing visions of progress, modernity and a sustainable future in the light of on-going environmental change. Principally, this module will provide an intellectual and political history of modern environmentalism from the eighteenth century to the present. |

| To introduce students to the developing field of environmental history through the study of humanity's relationship with nature in the modern era. To explore how past societies have interacted with their environment, both natural and man-made, and how this interaction has informed cultural, social and political developments over the last two hundred years. To explore the roots of modern enviornmentalism through an examination of environmental change and cultural responses to it. To consider how ideas of 'nature', 'wilderness', 'sustainability' and the management and/or exploitation of nature's resources have reshaped concepts of the environment in the modern era. |

| Essay A 2,000 word essay chosen from a list of c. 8 questions. The essay requires the student to demonstrate detailed knowledge gained from lectures, seminars and own reading, to reflect critically and to argue coherently in a structured form. |

| Seminar Portfolio Participation is assessed according to level of contribution as well as academic ability, considering evidence of preparation in response to set seminar topics, students' readiness to apply this preparation positively in class discussion and the quality of their contributions. The portfolio of written work will take the form of a weekly seminar journal, reflecting on detailed reading, documentary analysis and class discussions, the exact nature of which will vary week-by-week. The final journal should not exceed 2000 words. Half the marks will be given for seminar participation, and half for the written portfolio. |
