Description

The final module has three main themes. Firstly, we continue your practical development, as you teach a group of visiting students from Japan and continue with our regular weekly classes. We also tap into your creative side with the design, rationalisation and evaluation of various types of learning materials including the use of audio-visual sources and project work. Throughout the module we discuss career development and look at how you can find work both in the UK and overseas. Time is allocated for preparation for job interviews and ways to facilitate continuing professional development.

Aims

To continue the development of students' knowledge of the main features of contemporary written and spoken English.
To develop the skills and knowledge necessary to plan and deliver successful lessons.
To examine the relationship between language acquisition theory, language teaching methodology and materials design.
To encourage a critical analysis of published and self-created teaching materials.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Practical Assessment weighted 40%

Teaching Practice
Students will plan, deliver and reflect upon two one-hour English language classes.

02: Portfolio weighted 30%

A materials portfolio
Students will select two pieces of material they have designed and used in their practical sessions and write a rationale and evaluation for each piece. Each piece of writing should total no more than 450 words.

03: Class Test weighted 20%

Two in-class exercises
Students complete two thirty-minute in-class exercises based on the syntactic, phonological and lexical input covered in class.

04: Class Participation weighted 10%

The highly practical nature of the module necessitates full participation in all elements.
Based on the student's contribution to the input sessions, the mark will take into account evidence of a developing understanding of the methods and techniques involved in English language teaching and the quality of their contributions.
