Description

This module will further develop students communication skills in Mandarin Chinese, enabling them to speak, listen, read, and write in carrying out tasks they are likely to encounter in socialising, living, studying, travelling or working in China. Topics and functions covered in the module will include: making comparisons, discussing Chinese cities, regions, countryside and types of accommodation, holiday options, talking about choices and decisions, quoting reported speech. The students will have the awareness of the appropriate use of familiar register and will be able to switch familiar and normal polite as and when it is necessary. The module will build up students' competence of writing in Chinese characters and will also equip them with an understanding of contemporary Chinese culture and society.

Aims

This course aims to consolidate students' existing language skills and further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, which are the core components in developing learners&© communicative competence in Mandarin Chinese.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Coursework weighted 20%
Coursework portfolio documenting student's progress
The course work portfolio will comprise of formative and summative assessments completed during the course such as vocabulary exercises, written-up role-play dialogues, KLE tasks, listening and reading comprehension exercises, grammar exercises, very simple translations, written-up self directed learning tasks and class participation. Writing practice will focus on accuracy, the range of vocabulary, the quality of language and content. Students will also be required to complete a reflective study diary in English.

02: Unseen Exam weighted 40%
2-hour written examination
Examination testing writing and reading skills and the command of active and passive vocabulary from the topic areas studied.

03: Oral Exam weighted 20%
Oral exam
A short oral exam including tasks such as question and answer and role play.

04: Listening Comprehension weighted 20%
30-45 minute listening tasks
A 30-45 minute listening comprehension test based on authentic material.
