Prerequisites

Completion of German 5/GCSE grade A/B, CEFR level A2

Description

This course is designed for students who have completed German 5 or equivalent (e.g. GCSE grade A*, AS-level grade D or lower). There will be two contact hours per week over 11 weeks. Each week will be devoted to a different topic, which will include themes such as German identity, local culture and politics, festivals etc. The core skills listening, speaking, reading and writing will be expanded and communicative competence and awareness of grammar will be developed. Teaching will be based around a set course book which will be supplemented by a range of video and other language material. There will be a variety of tasks and exercises during each class, such as discussion and role play, listening comprehension and reading; and there will be further self-study opportunities via KLE and portfolio work.

Upon successful completion of this module, students will normally have reached level B1 of the Common European Language Framework (CEFR - B1)

Aims

To consolidate existing German language skills and further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills as well as developing general language learning skills.
The course is also designed to offer insights into cultural specificities of German speaking countries.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Coursework weighted 20%
Coursework portfolio demonstrating student's progress
The course work portfolio will comprise of formative and summative assessments completed during the course such as vocabulary exercises, written-up role-play dialogues, KLE tasks, listening and reading comprehension exercises, grammar exercises, very simple translations, written-up self directed learning tasks and class participation. Students will also be required to complete a reflective study diary

03: Oral Test weighted 20%
Oral exam
A 10-15 minute oral exam including tasks such an oral presentation, discussion and/or debate.

04: Listening Comprehension weighted 20%
