Students are only permitted to take one French module per semester. Students can only take one absolute beginners module (90001) in one academic year. This module cannot be taken as a Level 3 elective.

Description

This course is designed for students with no prior knowledge of French and will develop basic communication skills in French in everyday situations such as introducing oneself and giving and understanding personal information about oneself, family and friends.

Alongside the French language, you will get an insight into French culture e.g. about a variety of French traditions and customs, and culture specific behaviour. By following Units 1 to 4 of "French Experience 1- BBC Publications", you will be able to put the language learnt into the context of socialising, leisure, visits and work.

As the focus of this module is on communication skills, a large proportion of the course will be based on oral work speaking in groups and pairs in a variety of question-and-answer and role-play exercises. But you will also develop your reading and writing skills in French. The course book gives basic outline and structure to your learning, and will be supplemented by other materials. There will also be the opportunity to practise and reinforce vocabulary and language structures by using computer exercises in the KLE, linked to the weekly classes.

The language level of this module corresponds to work leading to Level A1 of the European Common Framework for Languages (CEFR -A1).
Aims
To equip students who have no prior knowledge of French with basic language skills and introduce them to aspects of French culture. The module also aims to introduce students to general language learning strategies.

Description of Module Assessment
01: Coursework weighted 20%
Coursework portfolio documenting student's progress
The course work portfolio will comprise of formative and summative assessments completed during the course such as vocabulary exercises, written-up role-play dialogues, KLE tasks, listening and reading comprehension exercises, grammar exercises, very simple translations, written-up self directed learning tasks and class participation. Students will also be required to complete a reflective study diary.
02: Unseen Exam weighted 40%
Written examination based on module material
Examination testing writing and reading skills and the command of active and passive vocabulary from the topic areas studied.
03: Oral Exam weighted 20%
Oral examination based on module material
Two short oral tests, one submitted online through the KLE and the other taking place in class, including tasks such as question and answer, role play, or presentation.
04: Listening Comprehension weighted 20%
