ONLY open to NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH currently enrolled on EAP1 (English for Academic Purposes 1) and EAP2 (English for Academic Purposes 2) or by recommendation of the English Language Unit.

Description

This module will equip students with the key reading and writing skills and vocabulary necessary for success in a wide range of communication activities, including those needed for undergraduate academic study. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing the ability to write clear and grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs, developing efficient and effective reading and note-taking strategies and building a core active vocabulary both for everyday and academic purposes. Small class size ensures maximum attention to the particular needs of each student. Please not that this module is generally open only to students already enrolled on either English for Academic Purposes 1 (EAP1) or English for Academic Purposes 2 (EAP2).
Aims
The module aims to provide students with the key reading and writing skills and vocabulary necessary for success in their academic subjects. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing the ability to write coherent and grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs, developing efficient and effective reading and note-taking strategies and building a core active vocabulary.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Form key English grammatical structures; produce coherent and grammatically correct English sentences and paragraphs; use key grammatical structures accurately and appropriately in their own writing, including using appropriate verb tenses and connectors, with particular focus on those structures most relevant to academic writing will be achieved by assessments: 1, 4, 5
Understand and extract meaning from increasingly complex material, particularly those written in an academic style will be achieved by assessments: 2 , 3, 4, 5
Extract key and supporting information more efficiently from increasingly lengthy and increasingly 'academic' texts will be achieved by assessments: 2 , 3, 4
Take comprehensive useful notes and summarise written sources based on these notes will be achieved by assessments: 1, 2, 4, 5
Understand and use a broader range of vocabulary in their own writing will be achieved by assessments: 1, 3, 4, 5
Self-correct and edit their own written work will be achieved by assessments: 1, 4, 4

Description of Module Assessment
01: Coursework weighted 40%
Writing tasks
A series of 10 writing tasks of 25-125 words increasing in length over the course of the module to assess ability to form and use key grammatical structures, vocabulary and appropriate connectors.
02: Class Test weighted 25%
Reading tests
A series of 4 class tests assessing ability to use reading strategies to identify and extract relevant information efficiently.
03: Class Test weighted 25%
Vocabulary tests
A series of 6 class tests on key vocabulary items.
04: Class Test weighted 10%
Final test
One-hour in-class final test of the vocabulary and reading and writing skills developed over the course of the module.
05: Coursework (must pass this element)
Mid-year language assessment
Formative assessment at the end of semester 1 to note progress against semester 1 assessments, to include 5 writing tasks, 2 reading tests and 3 vocabulary tests.
