Description

This module will help students develop and refine the specific writing, reading and verbal communication skills they will need to succeed in their degree studies. Through a series of workshops, lectures, assignments, on-line and practical tasks and projects, students will improve their ability to:

&· extract key information from extended academic texts
&· summarise, paraphrase and synthesise information from a variety of sources
&· identify an author's point of view, interpret data and read critically
&· cite sources accurately and produce a bibliography
&· research, prepare and construct an organised and coherent undergraduate academic essay
&· write in an accepted academic style
&· respond appropriately to set essay questions and prepare for essay examinations
&· understand and use key items of academic vocabulary
&· engage in academic discussion
&· prepare and deliver academic presentations


Aims

To improve the academic reading and writing skills necessary for the academic success of identified non-native English speaking students, and to help these students develop an active academic vocabulary.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Online Tasks weighted 10%
Exercises in a series of skill areas of academic English
Five on-line tasks assessing vocabulary development, listening skills and use of language structure.

02: Practical Assessment weighted 50%
Five writing tasks.
Students will write one summary, one paraphrased paragraph, one formal essay plan and two drafts of an 800-word essay.

03: Seminar weighted 20%
Students take part in a group discussion of a theme covered during the classes
Students will participate in a 30-minute seminar during which the language of seminars and the academic vocabulary covered in class will be assessed

04: Presentation weighted 20%
A 15 minute presentation on a theme covered in class
Students will prepare and deliver a 15-minute presentation based on a theme covered during the class sessions. They will be assessed on the language particular to delivering presentations, presentation organisation, delivery and accuracy of vocabulary
