Prerequisites

Open only to NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH after successful completion of AEB1 (Academic English for Business 1) with a score of under 60% or equivalent.

Description

Drawing on academic business themes and materials, these sessions will provide opportunities for students to further develop their writing, reading and verbal communication skills. Through a series of lectures, workshops, assignments, on-line and practical tasks, students will improve their ability to:
&· Summarise, paraphrase and synthesise information from a variety of sources
&· Cite sources accurately and write a bibliography
&· Gather, interpret and report on data
&· Identify authorial stance and read critically
&· Write in an appropriate style
&· Engage in academic discussion
&· Prepare and deliver business presentations


Aims

To introduce, develop and reinforce English vocabulary and language structures frequently encountered by students studying within KMS.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Class Participation weighted 10%
Contribution to input sessions
The accumulation of skills built up over the duration of the module necessitates full participation in all elements. Based on the student's contribution to the input sessions, the mark will take into account evidence of a developing understanding of the skills covered and the quality of students' contributions.

02: Portfolio weighted 60%
Five writing tasks
Completion of 5 writing tasks of up to 1000words including synthesising information from various sources, data interpretation and presentation, report and literature review

03: Presentation weighted 30%
Research and presentation
15 minute group presentation on an academic business-related topic. Subject to be chosen in negotiation with tutor. Presentation to be followed by questions. Students must prepare and submit a brief written abstract in advance of presentation.
