Prerequisites

Open only to non-native speakers of English and successful completion of ENL-10031 (EAP 1) or ENL-10032 (EAP 2), or equivalent or by recommendation of the English Language unit.

Description

Drawing on business-related themes, these sessions will help students to develop and refine the specific writing, reading and verbal communication skills they need to succeed in their studies. Through a series of workshops, lectures, assignments, online and practical tasks and projects, students will improve their ability to:
&· extract key information from academic texts
&· summarise, paraphrase and synthesise information from a variety of sources
&· identify authorial stance, interpret data and read critically
&· cite sources appropriately and write a bibliography
&· write in an accepted academic style
&· engage in academic discussion
&· prepare and deliver academic presentations


Aims

To provide targetted English vocabulary and structures to enable students to engage more fully in their academic studies within KMS.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Class Participation weighted 10%
Contribution to class activities
The accumulation of skills built up over the duration of the module necessitates full participation in all elements. Based on the student's contribution to the input sessions, the mark will take into account evidence of a developing understanding of the skills covered and the quality of students' contributions.

02: Portfolio weighted 60%
Completion of 5 writing tasks
Students will write one paraphrased paragraph, one summary, two drafts of an extended writing task of no more than 1000 words and one piece of reflective writing.

03: Presentation weighted 20%
Research and Presentation
15-minute group presentation related to students' principal subject chosen by students in negotiation with tutor. Presentation to be followed by question and answer period. Student to prepare and submit brief written abstract in advance of presentation.

04: Seminar weighted 10%
30-minute assessed group discussion
Students will be asked to prepare for and participate in a 30-minute seminar during which the language of seminars will be assessed.
