Description

This module will help students strengthen the key written and spoken communication skills they will need for success in their degree studies. Through a series of workshops, lectures, assignments, on-line tasks, practical work and small group and individual projects, students will improve their ability to:
· write clear and grammatically correct sentences in an academic style
· extract key information from extended academic texts
· summarise, paraphrase and synthesise information from a variety of sources
· cite sources accurately and produce a bibliography
· research, prepare and construct an organised and coherent undergraduate
academic essay
· respond appropriately to set essay questions and prepare for essay examinations
· develop a better understanding of techniques that can be employed to
enhance students' levels of spoken comprehensibility.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Class Participation weighted 10%
Contribution to input sessions
The accumulation of skills built up over the duration of the module necessitates full participation in all elements. Based on the student's contribution to the input sessions, the mark will take into account evidence of a developing understanding of the skills covered and the quality of students' contributions

02: Coursework weighted 60%
Five written assignments
Students will complete writing tasks of no more than 1,000 words developing summarising, paraphrasing, essay planning and essay writing skills.

03: Seminar weighted 15%
Seminar
Students will prepare for and participate in a 30-minute seminar during which their ability to present and support opinions, interact with their peers

04: Presentation weighted 15%
Group presentation
Students will deliver a 15-minute group presentation based on a theme decided in consultation with the section tutor.
