Description

This module will help students strengthen the fundamental English skills they will need for success with their academic work. Through a series of workshops, lectures, assignments, on-line tasks, practical work and small group and individual projects, students will improve their ability to:
· write clear and grammatically correct sentences
· read and identify key information from extended academic texts
· summarise, paraphrase and combine key information from a variety of sources
· cite sources accurately and produce a bibliography
· understand the purpose of an undergraduate academic essay, its components and structure
· respond appropriately to set essay questions
· follow and extract key information from academic lectures
· speak with clearer and more accurate pronunciation and intonation
participate more meaningfully in small group discussions and in academic situations


Aims

To improve the fundamental academic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that will be necessary for the academic success of identified non-native English speaking students.

Description of Module Assessment

01: Class Participation weighted 10%
Contribution to input sessions
The accumulation of skills built up over the duration of the module necessitates full participation in all elements. Based on the student's contribution to the input sessions, the mark will take into account evidence of a developing understanding of the skills covered and the quality of students' contributions.

02: Coursework weighted 60%
A series of writing tasks
Students will write a series of writing tasks of no more than 800 words. These will include one summary, one paraphrased paragraph, one formal essay plan and two drafts of an 800-word essay.

03: Seminar weighted 15%
A formal group discussion
Students will prepare for and participate in a 30-minute seminar during which the language of seminars and the academic vocabulary covered in class will be assessed

04: Presentation weighted 15%
A 15- minute group presentation
Students will prepare and deliver a 15-minute group presentation based on a theme covered during the class sessions. They will be assessed on the language particular to delivering presentations, presentation organisation, delivery and accuracy of vocabulary.
