Description

The module consists of an examination of theories of environmental citizenship, ways of finding out what people think environmental citizenship is, obstacles to (and opportunities for) practising environmental citizenship.

Aims

  • To familiarise students with theories of environmental citizenship and how they might work in practice
  • To develop students' capacities for working with questionnaires
  • To develop students' capacities for engaging in political theorising.


  • Intended Learning Outcomes

    By the end of the module you should have:

  • Worked with environmental citizenship questionnaires

  • Knowledge of the contours of environmental sustainability


  • Knowledge of relationship of main citizenship traditions to sustainability objectives

  • Knowledge of ecological footprint theory

  • The capacity to compare and contrast citizenship approaches to sustainability with other policy tools - e.g. fiscal incentives


  • Study hours

    The module is taught entirely through a weekly two-hour seminar. These meetings will consist of structured discussion, though we may provide occasional brief expositions and summaries where helpful. You are expected to come to seminars having read and thought about the reading, and prepared to discuss it.

    Assessment is by means of one 5000 word essay (maximum). A list of titles will be given out later in the semester.
