Description

To introduce students to the operation of the European Union. Students will be introduced to the major institutions and policies of the European Union. Topics of current concern within the European Union will also be discussed, for example the integration of the new post-Communist member states and the situation after the defeat of the EU Constitutional Treaty.



Aims

This course explores the development and functioning of the European Union. The course presents theories explaining the launch and subsequent development of the European integration process. It also considers the major institutions and policies of the EU, as well as the relationship of key member states with the EU.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will have:
  1. gained an understanding of the process of European integration;

  2. gained an understanding of the impact of the EU on member state politics;

  3. critically examined competing theories of the integration process; and developed interpersonal, communication and analytical skills by participating in small groups, preparing and presenting papers on particular questions and producing an essay on the subject.


Study hours

There will be e.g 15 one hour lectures (2 per week) and 5 one hour tutorial/seminar held fortnightly, beginning in week 2. Each tutorial will have a theme for discussion, except the final session, which will be devoted to exam revision (last chance to ask questions over the semester’s material).
