Description

This module deals with aspects of insect ecology that underlie the ways insects
affect us and our crops. Topics include: flight; mate-finding and
pheromones; migration; oviposition site selection; parasitoids;
vectors of animal and plant diseases; herbivores; pollination; and
pest management. 2 hours lecture and 1 hour tutorial or laboratory.

Aims

To provide the basic ecological knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for an applied entomologist in the fields of insect pest management and conservation.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, successful students will be able to:
  1. Describe the main ecological principles relevant to applied entomology and illustrate them with detailed examples.
  2. Consult the literature and report on the biology, ecology and pest or conservation status of a particular species of insect.
  3. Identify an adult insect to order and locate keys for identification to family and species.
