Description

(Year long module)

100 hours laboratory total over two semesters
Aims
To integrate and apply theory and practical techniques acquired previously to initiate and carry out a project as a team member in a research environment. To acquire and develop a portfolio of skills requisite for the efficient progress of a research project, appropriate to future academic or professional research.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Apply knowledge and understanding to plan and execute a programme of investigation, demonstrating the appropriate level of critical, practical and theoretical skills required.

Work safely within a research laboratory environment and identify the risks and hazards of processes associated with the research.

Produce a document at an appropriate level detailing the project rationale, results, conclusions and recommendations.

Communicate effectively the project rationale, methodology and outcomes.

Demonstrate the effective development of discipline-specific, transferable and employability skills throughout the project.
Study hours
Practical work and directed study: 100 hours (including supervisor contact). Report preparation: 40 hours. Viva voce examination and preparation: 10 hours
Description of Module Assessment
Research Report: A report comprising approximately 5000 words that details all work undertaken as part of the project and the skills employed, 50% weighting. Practical Assessment: Supervisor's assessment of the performance of the student throughout the duration of the project, 30% weighting. Viva: Viva voce examination on the project carried out, 20% weighting
001: Dissertation weighted 60%
4 - 5000 word report in the format of a research paper in an academic chemistry journal
002: Laboratory Book weighted 20%
assessment based on evidence presented in a detailed laboratory diary
003: Oral Exam weighted 20%
30 minute oral examination on the project, scheduled after submissioin of research report
