Code of Ethics & Policy on Confidentiality
Confidentiality is important in therapy The counsellor adheres to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Code of Ethics and Practice and would only consider breaking confidentiality in exceptional circumstances, where there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others:
If there were disclosure of ongoing abuse/ neglect of a child or vulnerable adultIf he/she considered a client to be a danger to him or herself or to othersIn situations where there is a legal obligation to do so (e.g. under the Terrorism Act 2000).
Even in these very rare circumstances, the Counsellor would normally discuss the situation with the client first, before contacting anyone else and encourage him or her to participate in the disclosure and support them in doing so.
Your attendance for counselling is not recorded outside the Staff Support Service. The Counsellor will not discuss what occurs in your therapy with anyone else.
Please ask if you have any questions on this policy.
