Supporting Disabled Students in Teaching and Learning

Length of programme: 2 hours

About the workshop

This is a 2-hour session delivered by Disability and Dyslexia Support.  The training is designed for teaching and support staff who work with disabled students, including the universities Disability Link Officers.  We will look at the kinds of disabilities that we currently support, and in particular, Asperger`s Syndrome, ADHD, Dyspraxia and Dyslexia.  We will also discuss some of the indicators that suggest that a student may have a disability and offer suggestions for adapting the learning environment to ensure accessibility.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the workshop you will:

  • Understand and use the services Disability and Dyslexia Support provides.
  • Identify some of the characteristics which indicate that a student may have a disability
  • Understand how some disabilities impact on learning.
  • Use a case study approach, identify some of the strategies which may be effective in supporting learning and the improvement of accessibility.

  • Equality Act 2010 - key points

Participants:

Open to all members of staff and in particular those involved in the Keele Knowledge Programme who are required to complete two open sessions within their first two years of employment at Keele.
