Presenting at Conferences

Length of Programme: 3 hours

About the Workshop:

Presenting your academic work can be nerve-racking, whether the context is an internal Keele symposium, a research seminar, or an external event. The more opportunities for practice and feedback, the more your confidence and skills will improve. This practical session will give you a chance to practice presenting in a supportive small-group environment and obtain feedback on what went well and what could be improved upon. Your presentation will be filmed (and only available to you) so that you can reflect on it later.

The workshop will begin by discussing effective presentation skills and issues to be mindful of when preparing and delivering papers at conferences and similar events. After a short refreshment break, the micro-presentation session will commence, with each participant presenting for 5 minutes, followed by 2 minutes of audience questions. This session will also offer an opportunity for peer and tutor feedback on how the presentation went and how successfully questions were dealt with.

Participants must come to the session with a 5 minute presentation prepared. This may be on your research, e.g. an aspect of your work that you might present on in the future or part of a paper that you are going to actually deliver this year, or on any other topic of your choice.

Participants:

All postgraduate researchers and others who are new to delivering conference presentations.
