Introduction to Teaching at Keele - Workshops 1, 2, 3 and 4
Length of Programme: 4 x 3 hour Workshops
This course provides support and training for researchers and others who are undertaking a small amount of teaching at Keele for the first time or thinking about teaching in the future. It is intended that the participants will develop a critical awareness and understanding of available teaching techniques, be able to make sound judgments of which techniques to select for a particular situation, and to be able to evaluate their own teaching and modify it as appropriate. The course does not provide fellowship of the Higher Education Acadmey but each component of the module has been mapped onto level 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education, which will facilitate a subsequent individual application. Those who successfully complete the assessment may be awarded the 15 credits for module EDU-10069 which may be counted towards their research training credits.
The course consists of four face-to-face workshops which take place from October to December. Each workshop runs at least twice in order to offer some flexibility to participants:
Workshop 1 - The Keele Context: This workshop will set teaching within the context of the University's learning and teaching strategy, the Distinctive Keele Curriculum and other key institutional frameworks. The human and physical resources available to support traching will also be considered.
Workshop 2 - Teaching Methods: This workshop will discuss practical strategies for teaching small and large groups, through discussion of written case studies and video clips of various teaching scenarios. There will also be an exploration of the literature underpinning good practice.
Workshop 3 - Presentation Skills: In this workshop participants will be required to present a five minute talk in small groups on a topic of their choice. This will be recorded and a structured discussion of the presentation of each talk will take place, with feedback. Further details of the arrangements will be provided to those who register.
Workshop 4 - Evaluating Teaching, Evaluating Student Work: The final workshop in the series will address two areas. 1, The main focus will be teaching evaluation at a variety of levels from national surveys, such as the National Student Survey (NSS), through to evaluations carried out by individual teachers. both formal and informal methods of reflecting on the effectiveness of your own practice will be explored. The best ways of making use of the information gathered will also be addressed. 2, Assessing student work and providing feedback useful in guiding student learning and consistent with institutional requirement and guidelines, will also be covered during this session.
If you wish to take the whole Introduction to Teaching at Keele course (EDU-10069), you must book on all four workshops in the series. Please note that for convenience there is an alternative date for these workshops.
There are three elements of assessment:
1.Compilation of a teaching diary.
2.Critique of a video of a teaching session.
3.Reflection on the presentation given in Workshop 3.
