Introduction to Teaching at Keele - Workshops 1, 2, 3 and 4

Length of Programme: 4 x 3 hour Workshops

This course provides support and training for researchers and others who are undertaking a small amount of teaching at Keele for the first time or thinking about teaching in the future. Participants will develop a critical awareness and understanding of available teaching techniques, be able to make sound judgments of which techniques to select for a particular situation, and be able to evaluate their own teaching and modify it as appropriate. The course does not provide fellowship of the Higher Education Academy but each component of the module has been mapped onto level 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education, which will facilitate a subsequent individual application. Doctoral researchers who successfully complete the assessment will be awarded 15 credits (module EDU-10069) which may be counted towards their research training credits.

The course consists of four face-to-face workshops which take place from October to December in Semester 1. The module is repeated in Semester 2 where there is demand.

Workshop 1 - The Keele Context: The first workshop will set teaching within the context of the University's learning and teaching strategy, the Distinctive Keele Curriculum, and other key institutional frameworks. The human and physical resources available to support teaching will also be considered.

Workshop 2 - Teaching Methods: This workshop will develop your teaching confidence through discussing practical strategies for teaching small and large groups and the literature underpinning good practice.

Workshop 3 - Microteach: In this workshop participants will present a five minute talk in small groups on a topic of their choice. This will be recorded for participants' own use and a structured discussion of the presentation of each talk will take place, with feedback.

Workshop 4 - Evaluating Teaching, Evaluating Student Work: The final workshop in the series will focus on two areas:

  1. Teaching evaluation at a variety of levels from national surveys, such as the National Student Survey (NSS), through to evaluations carried out by individual teachers. Both formal and informal methods of reflecting on the effectiveness of your own practice will be explored and the best ways of making use of the information gathered will also be addressed.
  2. Assessing student work and providing feedback useful in guiding student learning and consistent with institutional requirements and guidelines.

If you wish to take the whole Introduction to Teaching at Keele course (EDU-10069), you must book on all four workshops in the series. Please note that for convenience there is an alternative date for each of these workshops.

There are three elements of assessment:

  1. A teaching diary, reflecting on your own teaching practice or teaching observed.
  2. A reflection on your microteach from Workshop 3.
  3. A critique of a recording of a lecture (supplied by the tutor).
