Getting Started: Project Managing your PhD
Length of Programme: 6 hours
About the Workshop:
This day-long workshop designed for research students of all disciplines at the beginning of their studies, introduces simple techniques of project management to help organise the PhD in the most effective way. Students are encouraged to distinguish between importance (to them) and urgency (imposed by others)!
Topics covered include:
- choosing and defining the right words
- stakeholders
- scope
- tasks
- learning styles
- monitoring progress and risk
Techniques briefly described for managing one's PhD include objective trees, work breakdown structure, risk analysis, project networks, critical paths and Gantt charts - but the emphasis throughout is on application to the PhD.
This is not designed as an introduction to the subject of project management!
Through several small group break-out sessions, students also develop their networking skills and learn the art of being a rapporteur. Tips are also provided on how to nurture relationships with supervisors and how to keep going when the going gets tough.
This is a full day workshop with lunch provided
Participants:
Open to all Postgraduate Research Students
