- Avoiding Plagiarism and Research Misconduct
Avoiding Plagiarism and Research Misconduct
Length of Programme: 3 hours
About the workshop:
This course is designed to help research students avoid plagiarism by developing a culture of always acknowledging the work and ideas of others. This half day course is suitable for all students but may be particularly useful for those at the beginning of their research studies. A PhD means you know a lot about what you have investigated - AND it also means that you are competent, honest and truthful. Guidance is given about:
- what constitutes plagiarism - i.e. copying without acknowledging
- how to avoid plagiarising
- when to cite and when to acknowledge
- what is special about plagiarism in a research degree as opposed to plagiarism at undergraduate level
- how paraphrasing does not always avoid plagiarising
- the severe, career-threatening consequences of plagiarism and research misconduct
- what aspects there are of research misconduct, other than plagiarism - fabrication and falsification
- how to behave in a way that does not involve research misconduct
- Keele policies, including the Code of Practice, on plagiarism and research misconduct
Participants:
Open to all Postgraduate Research Students
