I grew up in Battersea, South London and did my first degree in Zoology at Chelsea College, London University graduating in 1966. I then spent two years on Voluntary Service Overseas working at the mosquito research and control unit in the Cayman Islands, West Indies obtaining an MSc with distinction from that research in 1969. After a brief period in the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, I was then appointed as Entomologist at the Wellcome Trust Parasitology Research Unit in Belem, Pará State, Brazil. There I studied sand flies and the transmission of different forms of the skin disease leishmaniasis. This disease in its cutaneous form and the visceral infection affect an estimated 1.5-2.0 million people annually and there are at least 75,000 deaths each year. I remained in Brazil for seven years and during that period completed my PhD in 1974. Returning to the UK in 1977 I joined the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine for 16 years firstly as an ODA Lecturer and then as Wellcome Senior Lecturer and Reader. I was appointed as Professor of Medical Entomology at Keele in 1994
Apart from two years working on mosquitoes I have focussed on Phlebotomine sand flies and their role in the transmission of leishmaniasis. Initially this work involved investigations into incriminating particular sandfly species as vectors of specific species of Leishmania in Brazil.
Subsequently, I have concentrated on the vector of the visceral form of leishmaniasis which our research group along with Brazilian colleagues has demonstrated is in fact a complex of species. I have been fortunate enough to work in many countries on these fascinating medically important insects and have over 140 publications to date on a wide range of relevant aspects of their biology.
