Joseph Burhani obtained his BSc in Biology with industrial experience from the University of Manchester in 2006, which included a microbiology-based industrial placement at a private company in South Wales. For his BSc project he worked on snRNA interactions involved in yeast mRNA splicing. He then undertook a voluntary placement in Kachhwa, a rural hospital in North India before returning in 2007 to complete an MSc in Biology and Control of Parasites and Disease Vectors at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. For his MSc research project he worked with Dr Emma Warr on the relationship between age and insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti. He then worked as a technician at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine for six months where he was involved in a number of projects under supervision of Dr Hillary Ranson including compilation of a database on insecticide resistance in disease vectors. In 2009, he commenced studying towards a PhD under the supervision of Dr Gordon Hamilton and Professor Richard Ward. His research aims to investigate the regulation of oviposition and mating in Aedes aegypti by volatile organic compounds.
