Sparrowhawk makes close-up appearance for Life Scientists
Keele campus is renowned for its large and varied bird population (see ‘Birds of Keele’ webpage here). Life Sciences staff and students were last week treated to a close-up view of a sparrowhawk which killed a wood pigeon in the Huxley Building courtyard. The hawk returned to its kill on the roof of the building for several days running, boldly providing an excellent view from nearby windows as it plucked and consumed the pigeon. ‘We thought it was snowing at first,’ said building manager Jayne Bromley, referring to the flurry of feathers drifting past her office window. The courtyard’s bird-feeding station maintained by Jayne also attracts nuthatches, grey wagtails, chaffinches, greenfinches, blue tits, great tits and coal tits, amongst others.
