Prior to joining Keele University, Maria was a lecturer at Edge Hill University. Previously, she had been a visiting lecturer at the Europa Institute of the University of Utrecht (the Netherlands) and a guest lecturer at the University of Passau (Germany) and at the Monash University of Australia (EU Center in Prato, Italy).

Maria’s research interests lie in EU constitutional and human rights law, privacy and data protection, and counter-terrorism law. Her current research focuses on the relationship between privacy and data protection and attempts to assess the added value of data protection as a fundamental right in the EU legal order.

Maria would be happy to supervise research in the areas of EU human rights and constitutional law, in particular projects related to the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights; data protection, privacy and more generally information rights in the Internet context and beyond; and, counter-terrorism and human rights.
