International Criminal Court Judge to Deliver Public Lecture at Keele

The Law School is pleased to announce that a lecture by Judge Howard Morrison of the International Criminal Court will take place at 6:00 p.m. on the 23 October 2013. The lecture is open to the public.

 

Lecture Title: “International Law: Hopes and Fears”

Description: In this Lecture, Judge Morrison will discuss the current position of the main international courts and tribunals.  In particular, he will present his personal view of where international criminal and humanitarian law now stands, where it is going, and how, in an increasingly globalised legal order, it might best evolve to cope with future challenges to humanity.

Speaker Bio: Judge Howard Morrison, CBE QC, was elected in December 2011 to sit for a 9 year term as the UK Judge to the International Criminal Court. He had previously served as a UN Secretary General appointed judge for the Special Tribunal for the Lebanon and as a Permanent Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Judge Morrison was called to the Bar by Grays Inn in 1977, being elected a Master of the Bench in 2008. After some 27 years of practice on the Midland and Oxford Circuit and at the ad hoc tribunals for Yugoslavia and Rwanda from 1 Kings Bench Walk [later removed to 36 Bedford Row] he was appointed a Circuit Judge and Senior Judge of the Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus. He is also called to the Bars of Fiji and the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.

He has acted as defence counsel both at the ICTY in The Hague and ICTR in Tanzania and lectured at universities and conferences in some 25 countries worldwide on issues of international criminal and humanitarian law.

He is an Hon Professor of Law at Leicester University and a visiting lecturer at universities in the UK, Holland, USA, Australia and, extensively, in the Middle East
