Beat the Flood-Practical Action's latest resource
Disaster response
How do engineers save lives in the aftermath of a disaster? The aim of this resource (from the Royal Academy of Engineering) is to give students an insight into the roles of engineers following a natural disaster.

The resource contains a collection of student activities and related resources to support classroom teaching at KS3. The context of disaster response provides human interest and provides opportunities for students to engage with relevant challenges and consider real-life solutions that demonstarte key ideas that they have met. Throughout the activities students are asked to apply knowledge skills and understanding. They are also asked to consider how they might be 'thinking like an engineer'.

This is interactive CPD at its best and the resource can be adapted for use with older or younger students. The resource (is free for the first 10 people from different schools that sign up) provides prompts, answers and notes to help support teachers, SAs and STEM Club leaders in their delivery of the course; there is also a student booklet with activity sheets. The students are first introduced to the range of types ohf natural diaster, and the kind of problems associated with them. The problem solving activities are organised into two groups:immediate problems and longer term problems. The challenges involve either a mathematical focus or a science, design and technology focus and are intended to show the importance of STEM subject knowledge, understanding and skills in solving problems.
