Course Information
Finance is concerned with the study of financial markets and institutions, specifically of the investment behaviour of firms and individuals under different institutional and market conditions. The finance principal proposes a focused programme. Modules are designed to provide a knowledge and understanding of modern finance in general and the methods and techniques used to evaluate financial information in particular.
This principal programme is part of a dual honours degree. Hence, at the end of the third year, you will have the same core knowledge of modern finance that you could expect to obtain in a single honours programme.
In each year you are expected to take four modules per semester (i.e. obtain 120 credits = 8x15 credits per year). As part of a dual honours principal you are expected to take all modules designated as core for that principal. In the case of the finance principal, three modules are core in the first and second year and two modules are core in the third year. Your other principal will make similar requirements. According to your interests, you will choose among a wide set of electives to satisfy the requirement of eight modules per year.

Level 1
The first year is dedicated to introducing you to finance. To understand the operation of financial markets you will learn both their institutional features and the economics principles which describe their behaviour. To become a finance graduate you will need to be at ease with statistics and understand introductory accounting. The first year programme provides you with the basics in both areas.
You will be expected to take three core modules in finance and choose one across the electives offered throughout the university. Two electives of this kind are offered by the Economics group:Strategic Thinking and British and Global Economy.
Level 2
The purpose of the second year is to improve your theoretical understanding of finance, and to expand your skills with the quantitative methods tools required for finance. As this requires all of your attention there are no options available to you in the second year.
Level 3
The third year finishes your training in finance and in particular you will find how the many theoretical ideas presented in the second year can be applied to various aspects of financial activities. In the second semester you are given the choice between various options which allow you to tailor your degree to your own interests.
Note that the choice of options in finance varies from one year to the next depending on staff availability and interests.
As in the previous two years, you can choose between electives offered by the Economics group or more widely between electives offered elsewhere in the university.
