Course Information
Economics is the study of the general principles that explain the behaviour of firms, individuals and governments and their interactions. It applies in particular to the analysis of markets and government policy.
This principal programme is part of a dual honours degree. Hence, at the end of the third year you will have the same core knowledge of economics that you could expect to obtain in a single honours programme.
In each year you will take four modules per semester (i.e obtain 120 credits = 8x15 credits per year). As part of a dual honours principal you are expected to take all modules designated as core for that principal. In the case of the economics principal, three modules are core in the first and second year and two modules are core in the third year. Your other principal will make similar requirements. According to your interests, you will choose among a wide set of electives to satisfy the requirement of eight modules per year.
The first year of principal economics is devoted to the study of the basic principles of economics. You will be expected to take three core modules in economics and choose one across the electives offered throughout the university. Three electives of this kind are offered by the Economics group:
- Strategic Thinking
- British and Global Economy
In the second year you will have to take three core modules in economics and choose one across all the electives offered throughout the university. The Economics group offers two such electives in the second semester: Contemporary Economics or Political Economy.
Your studies in the final year are equally divided between the study of core modules in microeconomics and macroeconomics at the advanced undergraduate level and two further optional modules. These optional electives allow you to design your programme of studies in the final year to fit your own interests. Note that the choice of option in economics varies from one year to the next depending on staff availability and interests.
As in the previous two years, you can choose between electives offered by the Economics group or more widely between electives offered elsewhere in the university.
