BA Business Economics - Keele University

Keele Management School

Course Information

The Single Honours degree programme in Business Economics provides you with a flexible combination of modules in economics, finance and management with a wide range of electives. The programme brings together a thorough foundation in economic analysis with business-oriented applications to management and finance that are essential in the modern business environment. Undergraduate students successfully completing the programme are able to gain exemptions for two out of the five papers which make up the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting qualification. These are: CIMA paper C3 “Fundamentals of Business Mathematics” and CIMA paper C4 “Fundamentals of Business Economics”. The CIMA Certificate is the entry requirement to the CIMA Professional qualification and a recognised qualification in its own right.

You take eight modules each year. These build sequentially so as to enable students to systematically develop their understanding of the subject progressively across the three years of their study. Electives may be chosen to deepen your understanding of the core materials or broaden studies and develop your own interests.

The first year of Business Economics introduces the key areas of study and lays the groundwork in data analysis. The core modules comprise an introduction to economics, finance, management and accounting principles whilst the quantitative methods module lays the foundations in data analysis. In addition, you choose two elective modules that may include business law, strategy, HRM or marketing.

In the second year we build upon your understanding of economics and finance in the core of the programme and develop your analytical skills further. This is supported by a wide-range of electives that are available from across the School.

The third year builds on the first two years and introduces you to the more advanced material. Again the programme of study is divided between core modules and optional modules. The four core modules focus on advanced economic analysis and the study of the methods of management science and business forecasting. The four options are taken from a list of options which, again, cover subjects in economics, finance, management and management science. This degree of choice allows you to tailor your learning course to your own interests.
